Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has expressed dissatisfaction with the decision to conduct the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in seven phases, suggesting that it indicates Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intention to tour extensively across the country.
Kharge remarked that the elections could have been completed more efficiently in three or four phases instead.
Speaking to reporters, Kharge highlighted his experience of contesting in numerous elections, where the phases rarely exceeded four. He emphasized that the elongated duration of the election process, spanning over 70-80 days, would disrupt developmental activities and the progress of the nation.
With the implementation of the election code of conduct, he argued, essential materials wouldn't be supplied, and budget allocation would be stalled, hindering infrastructure and business operations.
Kharge expressed concerns that the prolonged election schedule could hamper the completion of various projects and infrastructure development, affecting both the public and governmental activities.
He suggested that a shorter election period would have facilitated smoother functioning and completion of essential tasks.
Despite his reservations, Kharge acknowledged that the decision lies with the Election Commission and the government. He expressed his belief that a more condensed election schedule would have been more beneficial for the country's overall progress.
The Election Commission announced that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections will commence on April 19 and will be conducted in seven phases. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4, marking the culmination of what is touted as the world's largest democratic exercise.
Critics argue that the prolonged election schedule could disrupt the normal functioning of governance and developmental activities, while supporters contend that the phased approach ensures a fair and systematic electoral process across diverse regions of the country.
The upcoming elections are anticipated to be closely monitored and heavily contested, with political parties gearing up for intense campaigning and mobilization efforts nationwide.
