Low visibility due to dense fog disrupted operations at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Friday morning, delaying over 100 flights and causing inconvenience to passengers.
The Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) noted that flights compliant with CAT III standards continued to operate amidst the challenging conditions.
"Due to dense fog, there has been impact on flight departures; however, flights which are CAT III compliant are able to land and depart from Delhi airport," stated DIAL in a post on X at 5:52 am.
IndiGo Airlines, the country’s largest carrier, urged passengers to verify flight schedules before heading to the airport. "We strongly recommend planning extra time for your journey to the airport as foggy conditions in Delhi are reducing visibility and slowing down traffic," the airline posted on X at 5:04 am.
Flight tracking data from Flightradar.com indicated that over 100 flights faced delays. DIAL, meanwhile, advised passengers to directly contact their airlines for updated information and apologised for the inconvenience caused.
The IGIA, one of the busiest airports in the country, handles approximately 1,300 flight movements daily. Passengers were encouraged to remain vigilant and factor in additional travel time.
CAT III compliance enables aircraft to operate in minimal visibility, ensuring continuity of some flights even in adverse weather. However, widespread delays highlighted the challenges posed by the dense fog blanket engulfing the national capital.
