Concerns raised in Lok Sabha over online gaming, polyester fibre costs, and gang activities in Lok Sabha on Friday.

Lok Sabha MP Shrikant Shinde raised alarms on Friday about the rising popularity of gaming applications, some of which involve betting, and their impact on the country’s youth. Speaking during the Zero Hour, Shinde highlighted that 3.5 per cent of adolescents suffer from gaming disorder, which has led to financial crises for some individuals.

“There is a significant issue with online gaming addiction in India, particularly with games like Junglee Rummy,” said Shinde, the Kalyan MP. “These trends affect not only the youth but also have a profound impact on various levels of society.”

Shinde noted that the online gaming market is expected to reach approximately USD 30 billion by 2025, with Junglee Rummy holding a substantial share involving betting. He called for increased awareness about the risks associated with online gaming and advocated for stricter regulations.

In a separate matter, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram addressed concerns over the cost of polyester fibre, which he claimed has been artificially inflated due to non-tariff barriers on imports. According to Chidambaram, polyester fibre costs Rs 80 per unit internationally but Rs 110 per unit in India.

Chidambaram accused certain manufacturers of benefiting from these barriers, alleging crony capitalism in the polyester fibre trade. “This non-tariff barrier is protecting certain manufacturers who are profiteering from the high prices, making textile units unviable,” he said. “The biggest beneficiary is an A-list company. This blatant crony capitalism must be scrapped.”

Ludhiana MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring raised concerns about the activities of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, questioning the government’s response to the gang’s criminal activities. “Lawrence Bishnoi, who is in Sabarmati Jail, is a significant terror in the country,” Warring said. “He has murdered Sidhu Moosewala and threatened Salman Khan, and continues to extort money from businessmen.”

Warring urged the government to take action against Bishnoi, who he claimed is responsible for daily murders and has even given interviews from jail.
