Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, describing the achievement as a defining moment in the country’s democratic journey and a milestone that will be remembered for generations.

PM Modi completed 4,399 consecutive days in office, surpassing the record held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who served 4,398 consecutive days after the country’s first general elections. In a letter addressed to PM Modi, LS Speaker Birla said June 10, 2026, would be remembered as a historic chapter in the evolution of Indian democracy.

“Today, you are setting a unique record by serving the nation for the longest period as the elected Prime Minister of independent India and as the Leader of the House in the Lok Sabha. On this occasion, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes,” LS Speaker Birla said.Reflecting on the significance of the milestone, the Lok Sabha Speaker said the occasion was not merely about the duration of a political tenure but about the impact of leadership on governance, democratic institutions, national development, and public confidence.

“Some achievements in history transcend mere statistics; they come to define an era. I am confident that this occasion will be remembered as one of the significant milestones in the history of Indian democracy,” he said. He highlighted PM Modi’s long public life and commitment to public service, noting that his early travels across the country helped him understand the aspirations and challenges faced by ordinary citizens.

The LS Speaker praised several flagship welfare and development initiatives launched under the Modi government, including the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, Ujjwala Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Swachh Bharat Mission, Ayushman Bharat, PM-Kisan, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and Fit India Movement. LS Speaker Birla said these programmes reflected the Prime Minister’s belief that governance should be measured by tangible outcomes and positive societal transformation rather than intentions alone.

On internal security, LS Speaker Birla credited the government with addressing long-standing challenges and strengthening national unity. He pointed to the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, stating that the move had helped curb terrorism and replace violence with peace, tourism, and development. He also highlighted progress in tackling Left-Wing Extremism through a combination of security measures and development initiatives.

“This confluence of a fear-free environment and development further strengthens the resolve of a New India,” he said.LS Speaker Birla also praised the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and India’s global outreach through the Vaccine Maitri initiative. He noted that India’s standing on the world stage had risen significantly during PM Modi’s tenure due to an increasingly proactive foreign policy.

The LS Speaker added that PM Modi’s leadership continues to provide direction, momentum, and inspiration to the aspirations of 1.4 billion Indians as the country advances toward its long-term development goals.
