As the Maharashtra Assembly elections approach, National Congress Party (NCP) chief Ajit Pawar announced that the first round of seat-sharing discussions among the Mahayuti alliance partners has concluded. Pawar shared that the alliance will reconvene to finalise decisions on the 288 available seats.
The discussions will focus on allocating seats based on merit and suitability, with further meetings planned to ensure a fair distribution. Pawar emphasised that the process will prioritise merit in deciding the seat allocations.
In response to recent controversies, particularly remarks made by Shiv Sena leader Tanaji Sawant about NCP leaders, Pawar chose to stay silent. He indicated that he would not engage in public disputes and preferred to concentrate on his work. Sawant had expressed frustration with the alliance, making disparaging comments about his interactions with NCP leaders.
Additionally, Pawar visited Malvan, where a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj collapsed recently. He expressed sadness over the incident and assured that efforts are underway to rebuild the memorial.
Pawar stated that those responsible would be held accountable, regardless of their attempts to evade responsibility. The focus, he noted, should be on rectifying the situation rather than debating the cause.
The Maharashtra Assembly elections will feature a contest between two major alliances. The Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition, which includes the UBT Shiv Sena, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), and Congress, will face off against the MahaYuti Alliance, composed of the BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction). The Election Commission of India has yet to announce the election dates.
In recent Lok Sabha elections, the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance gained a boost with significant wins: Shiv Sena (UBT) secured nine seats, Congress won 13, and NCP-SP achieved eight seats, totaling 30 seats for the alliance.
Conversely, the MahaYuti Alliance saw a setback, with the BJP winning nine seats, Shiv Sena securing seven, and NCP earning one seat, resulting in a total of 17 seats for the alliance.
