President Droupadi Murmu appointed Bhartruhari Mahtab, Member of Parliament, as the Pro-tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha on Thursday. This appointment was made under Article 95(1) of the Constitution.
Mahtab will carry out the duties of the Speaker until a new Speaker is elected. The role of the Pro-tem Speaker is crucial as they oversee the first meeting of the newly elected Lok Sabha, administer the oath to new members, and ensure the election of the new Speaker is conducted smoothly.
“President is pleased to appoint Shri Bhartruhari Mahtab, Member, Lok Sabha as Speaker Protem under Article 95(1) of the Constitution to perform the duties of Speaker till election of the Speaker,” announced Kiren Rijiju, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs.
Additionally, the President appointed Suresh Kodikunnil, Thalikkottai Rajuthevar Baalu, Radha Mohan Singh, Faggan Singh Kulaste and Sudip Bandyopadhyay to assist Speaker Protem in Oath/Affirmation to newly elected Members of 18th Lok Sabha till election of the Speaker, informed Rijiju.
