Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for using the name of Goddess Kali in his Bengal rally, accusing him of making a desperate move to win over Bengali voters.
"Bit late in the day to begin invoking Maa Kali in search of Bengali votes Hon'ble @narendramodi- she doesn't eat dhoklas & never will," she posted on X.
Her statement was made a day after PM Modi addressed a rally in Bengal's Durgapur on Friday. While speaking at a public rally in Durgapur, PM Modi blamed the TMC government for ruling over a "double attack of crime and corruption," particularly in the education sector.
"Be it primary education or higher education, the system is being destroyed at every level. The TMC government has outsourced Bengal's education to crime and corruption and is giving a double blow to it. Thousands of quality teachers are out of work today due to TMC's corruption," he added.
PM Modi’s comments come amidst ongoing protests regarding the 2024 Calcutta High Court decision that cancelled teacher appointments in a significant recruitment scam. On July 14, SSC-qualified teachers under the ‘Jogya Shikshak Shikshika Adhikar Mancha’ banner marched to the state secretariat Nabanna, seeking justice.
The Prime Minister, while emphasising the effect on thousands of children owing to a lack of teachers, said, "This has brought crisis upon thousands of families. TMC has pushed both the present and the future of Bengal into darkness." He even raised concerns regarding the safety of campuses, bringing up instances of sexual harassment.

Referring to the RG Kar Medical College case, which resulted in mass protests, PM Modi declared, "The party which speaks of 'Mother, Soil, Humanity' is inflicting pain and anger because of the injustice done to daughters. Hospitals in West Bengal are not safe now. When a doctor daughter was brutalised, the TMC government became busy shielding the accused."
He also charged the TMC, Left, and Congress with ignoring the Bengali language, adding, "It was the BJP government that awarded classical language status to Bangla. TMC and Left aided Congress for decades in Delhi, yet didn't bother to do so."
Drawing attention to industrial deterioration in Bengal, PM Modi mentioned that the youth were forced to leave because there weren't enough job opportunities.
