Even as the judiciary has been witnessing tussle on a host of issues with Centre, the latter has effected a major reshuffle approving the transfer of 16 High Court judges across different states. These transfers were made following the recommendations of the Supreme Court Collegium on May 26.
In a parallel move, the Centre has also cleared the appointment of new Chief Justices to the High Courts of Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Gauhati, Patna, and Jharkhand,Even though some postings and transfers of judges were due to take place, this move is apparently aimed at improving the efficiency of the judiciary and addressing the unique needs of different regions.
Justice Anil Kshetarpal has been transferred from the Punjab and Haryana High Court to the Delhi High Court. Justice Suman Shyam, who was earlier serving at the Gauhati High Court, has now been moved to the Bombay High Court. Justice Sudhir Singh, who was serving at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, is now returning to his parent Patna High Court.
Justice Sujoy Paul has been transferred from the Telangana High Court to the Calcutta High Court. Justice V. Kameswar Rao is returning to the Delhi High Court from the Karnataka High Court. Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma is also returning to his parent Rajasthan High Court from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He had earlier served in Patna due to medical issues.
Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh has been transferred from the Kerala High Court to the Karnataka High Court. Justice Vivek Kumar Singh is being moved from the Madras High Court to the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Justice Vivek Chaudhary is shifting from the Allahabad High Court to the Delhi High Court.
Justice Battu Devanand is going back to the Andhra Pradesh High Court from the Madras High Court, ustice Om Prakash Shukla is being transferred from the Allahabad High Court to the Delhi High Court. Justice Arun Monga has been transferred from the Rajasthan High Court to the Delhi High Court.
Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra has been transferred from the Allahabad High Court to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Justice Jayant Banerji is now moving from the Allahabad High Court to the Karnataka High Court. Justice Shree Chandrashekhar has been transferred from the Rajasthan High Court to the Bombay High Court. Justice Lanusungkum Jamir, who served at the Gauhati High Court, has now been transferred to the Calcutta High Court.
This sweeping reshuffle is seen as an effort by the judiciary to distribute legal expertise more evenly and address regional imbalances. It also reflects the Supreme Court Collegium’s attempt to enhance judicial administration by placing experienced judges where their presence is most required.
