Swati Maliwal, a Rajya Sabha MP, has called on the newly elected Delhi government to present the Comptroller and Auditor General’s (CAG) report and prioritise cleaning the Yamuna river.
She emphasised the need for transparency and action, particularly targeting former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, whom she accused of betraying the anti-corruption movement.
Maliwal criticised Kejriwal, stating that despite his initial fight against corruption, the CAG reports since 2016 have not been presented in the Delhi Assembly. She demanded that these reports be tabled, exposing any corruption, and that strict measures be taken to address the issues highlighted in them.
Apart from the CAG report, she also raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of the Yamuna river, which she claimed had been reduced to a drainage system over the last decade. She urged the government to take immediate steps to rejuvenate the river.
During the Delhi elections, Maliwal had actively campaigned against pollution in the Yamuna. She had even collected water from the river and protested alongside several Purvanchali women, holding Kejriwal accountable for the poor state of the river.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders, including newly sworn-in legislators, are expected to visit the Yamuna for an inspection. Delhi minister Pankaj Kumar Singh assured that the government is committed to cleaning the river and promised that people would witness a transformed Yamuna by the next Chhath festival.
The issue of the CAG report has also been a point of political debate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier assured that the report would be presented in the first session of the new assembly.
The findings of the report revealed a revenue loss of over Rs 2,026 crore due to irregularities in the Delhi government’s excise policy. It highlighted deviations from policy objectives, a lack of transparency in pricing, and the failure to penalise violations in issuing licenses.
