Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday launched a strong critique of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of opposing the Centre’s anti-terror operation, Operation Sindoor, and the Waqf Amendment Act in an alleged effort to appease the Muslim vote bank.
Speaking at a gathering of BJP leaders and party workers, Shah asserted that Banerjee’s stance on Operation Sindoor was an insult to the women of India. “To appease the Muslim vote bank, Mamata didi opposed Operation Sindoor. By doing so, she is insulting the mothers and sisters of this country,” Shah said. He further claimed that Banerjee and her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), would face the consequences in the 2026 assembly elections. “In 2026, the mothers and sisters of the state will teach the CM and the TMC a lesson,” he added.
Mamata Banerjee had recently criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP, alleging that the government was politicising Operation Sindoor—India’s military retaliation to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam—for electoral advantage.
Addressing the recent communal violence in West Bengal, Shah alleged that the April riots in Murshidabad were "state-sponsored." He claimed that senior TMC leaders were involved in the violence, which erupted during protests related to the Waqf law. “The Murshidabad riots were state-sponsored. The Ministry of Home Affairs kept insisting on deploying BSF to control the situation, but the TMC government refused, allowing the violence to continue,” Shah said.
The riots resulted in at least three deaths and left several injured. Further criticising the TMC, Shah accused Banerjee of opposing the Waqf Amendment Act purely for appeasement. “Mamata Banerjee is against the law for appeasement politics,” he stated.
Shah also alleged that the TMC government was enabling illegal infiltration from neighbouring Bangladesh. “Mamata Banerjee has opened Bengal’s borders to Bangladeshis. She can never stop infiltration. Only the BJP can do that,” he asserted.
Responding to TMC’s criticism of the Border Security Force (BSF) for not stopping illegal entries, Shah claimed the West Bengal government itself had obstructed the BSF’s efforts. “The Mamata government has not provided the required land for the BSF to operate effectively. Once the TMC gives BSF the needed land, we will put a stop to infiltration,” he said. He added, “But Bengal’s ruling party would never do that. They want infiltration to continue so they can secure their vote bank and stay in power.”
