West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to visit Murshidabad on Monday, 5 May, in a high-stakes outreach mission following recent communal unrest in the region.

During the visit, she is expected to tour several sensitive areas including Suti, Shamsherganj and Dhulian — epicentres of the recent violence that claimed three lives and left hundreds displaced.

According to government sources, the Chief Minister will meet victims and locals affected by the clashes and will personally distribute financial compensation.

Her itinerary includes interactions with residents of violence-hit areas, as well as participation in an administrative meeting and multiple public welfare events throughout the day.

Although the final venue for the administrative meeting is yet to be confirmed, Chhabghati Maidan in the Suti Assembly constituency — where Mamata previously convened a similar meeting on 19 April — is being considered as the venue. If that location is unavailable, alternative sites are being assessed by the district administration.

TMC MLA from Farakka, Monirul Islam, confirmed that Banerjee will be visiting both Shamsherganj and Dhulian. There, she will assess the damage firsthand, speak to affected families and deliver relief packages.

During an earlier address in West Medinipur, Mamata had vowed to visit Murshidabad in early May and announced that the state would reconstruct the homes destroyed in the violence under its housing scheme.

In anticipation of her arrival, the district administration has gone into overdrive. Officials are finalising which projects will be inaugurated, which foundation stones will be laid, and which beneficiaries will receive aid under flagship welfare schemes.

Simultaneously, restoration work has begun across damaged infrastructure, including urgent repairs to several key roads in the Dhulian municipality area.

A comprehensive list of victims is also being prepared. In Shamsherganj alone, approximately 300 families and local businesses have been impacted.

The government is reportedly drafting a recovery and rehabilitation package for them, including job training programmes and financial aid. It is widely anticipated that the Chief Minister will announce and disburse targeted assistance to these families during her visit.

The violence in Murshidabad, triggered by protests related to the amended Waqf Act, led to escalating tension in the region. The local population has been demanding Mamata’s presence and her direct intervention since the violence erupted.

Her upcoming visit is seen as both a gesture of solidarity and a strategic administrative move to restore confidence and reinforce law and order in the region.

With heightened security arrangements and intense administrative activity underway, Murshidabad braces for a politically and emotionally charged visit that could mark a turning point in its recovery from unrest.
