The Manipur woman and her friend from Assam were assaulted near Saket District Court in Delhi after objecting to harassment.

A woman from Manipur and her friend from Assam were allegedly assaulted near a park by the Saket District Court complex on Sunday evening after they objected to inappropriate remarks made by a group of men, Delhi Police stated on Monday.

The victims were walking together when the men allegedly made offensive comments. An officer said the confrontation escalated after one of the women protested, leading to a physical attack. “The woman was reportedly assaulted, and belts were allegedly used by the attackers,” the officer added.

The injured woman was taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment, while preliminary reports indicate minor injuries. She is now stable. Police confirmed they are in touch with the victims and are monitoring the situation closely, promising strict action against those involved. CCTV footage is being reviewed to identify the suspects, who are believed to be local residents.

This attack comes amid a worrying pattern of harassment and assault targeting people from the Northeast living in Delhi. Last month, three students from Arunachal Pradesh were racially abused by a couple in Malviya Nagar.

The Delhi Police registered a case and arrested the accused, while Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta met the affected students, assuring support and justice.

The Saket incident has sparked outrage across the Northeast. Conrad Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, expressed anger over repeated attacks on Northeastern residents in mainland India. In a post on X, he called the assault on the Manipur and Assam residents “sickening,” highlighting the persistent threat faced by these communities.

Activists and civil society groups have emphasised the need for stronger measures to ensure safety and inclusion for women and gender-diverse residents from the region. With repeated incidents drawing national attention, authorities face growing pressure to implement effective protections against harassment, racial abuse, and violence.

Delhi Police have assured that investigations are underway and urged anyone with information about the attackers to come forward. The case underscores the continuing vulnerability of Northeastern residents in major urban centres, reigniting public debates on safety, dignity, and justice.

Four minors apprehended for assault

Four juveniles were apprehended in connection with the alleged assault of a Manipuri woman who objected to harassment by them at a park in south Delhi, police said on Monday.

According to a senior police officer, the minors allegedly made comments at the two women.

"When one of them objected, a verbal argument ensued, after which the accused allegedly assaulted the woman," the officer said.

The woman sustained minor injuries in the attack and was taken to Safdarjung Hospital for medical examination and treatment, he said.

Following the incident, police teams were formed to identify and trace the suspects. In the subsequent raids conducted by the police, all four accused were apprehended.
