On Friday night, suspected Maoist rebels killed a man working as a quack in the rural areas of West Singhbhum district in Jharkhand, branding him as a police informer. The incident unfolded in Bandabeda village within the highly Naxal-affected Tonto police station area of the district.
The victim, identified as Jiten Laguri, fell victim to close-range gunfire from CPI (Maoist) rebels, who accused him of collaborating with the police. Locals reported that the bullet, piercing his body, became lodged in the wall of his house. On Saturday morning, villagers discovered Laguri's lifeless body near his residence.
Sources said that Jiten Laguri had gone to Chaibasa on Friday to purchase some items of his use. After shopping, he returned to the village by his motorbike late in the evening. After reaching the village, he parked his bike and had just entered the house when the Maoists waiting near his house asked him to come out. As soon as he came out of the house, the rebels fired two bullets at him. He succumbed to the bullet injuries on the spot.
Villagers came to know about the incident on Saturday morning. It is being said that Jiten was being monitored by the Maoists for a long time. The Maoists suspected that he used to go to Chaibasa and give information about the activities inside the forest to the police.
West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police Ashutosh Shekhar said that information has been received about a villager being shot dead. In this regard, the security team has been sent to the spot. Anything can be said only after reaching the spot. He said that it is difficult to confirm whether the shooting incident was carried out by Maoists or criminals. He said that the investigation of the entire matter would reveal the real picture about the incident.
