US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, accompanied by his wife Jeanette, visited the Taj Mahal on Monday.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, accompanied by his wife Jeanette, visited the Taj Mahal at around 10:15 am on Monday. A sizeable 60-member delegation joined the couple at the iconic monument. Earlier in the morning, Rubio arrived at Kheria Airport, where he was formally received by Commissioner Deepak Kumar and District Magistrate Manish Bansal, spending a few moments chatting with the local officials before heading straight to the monument complex.

The couple spent roughly an hour exploring the grounds, where local guide Nitin Gupta briefed them on the rich history and cultural significance of the structure. Security was understandably tight for the high-profile visit, with barricades erected around the perimeter and tourists inside the complex asked to clear the area ahead of the delegation's arrival. Following the tour, Rubio is scheduled to have lunch at Hotel Amar Vilas before departing for Jaipur via a special flight at 12:50 pm. Local authorities, alongside personnel from American security agencies, had already conducted a full rehearsal of the security arrangements and transit route on Sunday to ensure everything went off without a hitch.

This cultural stop comes during Rubio’s four-day visit to India, which began on Saturday, 23rd May. Over the weekend, he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Seva Teerth, where he extended an official invitation from former US President Donald Trump for Modi to visit the United States. The high-level trip arrives at a crucial juncture, given that India-US relations have faced a fair amount of friction over various issues since the middle of last year. Diplomatic observers view the visit as a deliberate effort to steady the ship and revitalise bilateral ties between the two nations.
