A massive landslide today caused a blockage on the Badrinath National Highway in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, disrupting the flow of traffic. A 30-second video depicts a substantial part of a hill collapsing and obstructing the road with large rocks at Chungi Dhar in Joshimath.
The video captures the sounds of people screaming in panic as they flee for safety. Many individuals were also observed recording the event on their mobile devices.
Due to the landslide, numerous people and vehicles found themselves stranded on both ends of the road. The highway to Badrinath was closed in the morning, and while authorities were clearing the rubble, another landslide occurred.
Authorities promptly summoned the police and administration to clear the debris, with expectations for the road to reopen by late night.
Parts of Uttarakhand have experienced heavy rainfall in recent days, leading to landslides in the hills that have blocked the highway to Badrinath in multiple locations. Numerous roads are impassable, and several villages in Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar districts are suffering from extensive waterlogging due to the continuous rain.
The Badrinath Highway was blocked on Friday because debris fell and accumulated at two spots in Chamoli. This disruption has affected the busy Bhanerpani-Pipalkoti Naga Panchayat road and Angthala road, leaving many commuters and locals stranded, as reported by news agency ANI.
On Saturday, two tourists from Hyderabad lost their lives in Chamoli district after being struck by boulders during a landslide, according to the police. Their bodies were later recovered from the rubble of the landslide.
