Defence Ministry To Promote 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' Initiative and Plan 15 Lakh Trees On 15th August.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is gearing up for an extensive tree plantation drive across India, aiming to plant 15 lakh trees in celebration of the 78th Independence Day on August 15. This significant initiative, part of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, will be conducted through the combined efforts of the three services and associated organisations like DRDO, Defence PSUs, CGDA, NCC, Sainik schools, and ordnance factories.

The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, which translates to ‘A Tree in the Name of Mother,’ was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on World Environment Day, June 5. The campaign aims to encourage people to plant trees in honour of their mothers, fostering a personal connection to environmental conservation.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has been an active participant in the campaign, planting a tree in memory of his mother and urging citizens to join the movement. Singh emphasised the importance of protecting nature and making environmental protection a dynamic, community-driven effort.

In support of this campaign, a pedestrian program named ‘Raahgiri’ was organised on July 21 at Arjun Chowk of Brahamasarovar in Kurukshetra. Themed “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,” the event saw thousands of citizens come together to plant trees.

The Chief Minister of Haryana, Nayab Singh Saini, was the chief guest at the event, which also featured the participation of Minister Subhash Sudha. The event included cultural programs, sports demonstrations, and stalls set up by various departments.

Addressing the public, Chief Minister Saini expressed his appreciation for the large turnout and the enthusiasm shown by the citizens of Kurukshetra. He highlighted the significance of community participation in the success of such programs.

Saini noted that the Raahgiri program is organised at different levels across the state by the government, but its success is amplified by the active involvement of the public.

Saini also spoke about the alarming rise in pollution levels in Haryana over the past few years. He emphasised the importance of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign in combating this issue. Following Prime Minister Modi’s initiative, Haryana aims to plant 1.5 crore trees, making the state a greener and healthier place to live.

He highlighted the active involvement of youth in the Raahgiri program, particularly those participating in cycling and setting up stalls from self-help groups. The presence and participation of NCC students showcasing their skills further energised the event.

The massive tree plantation drive by the MOD is a testament to the government's commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development. By involving various sectors of the defence forces and other associated organisations, the campaign aims to create a widespread impact.

This initiative is expected to significantly contribute to the fight against climate change and environmental degradation, promoting a greener India for future generations.

The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign and the associated events like Raahgiri demonstrate a unified effort towards environmental protection and community engagement.

The Ministry of Defence’s mission to plant 15 lakh trees on Independence Day is a commendable step towards a sustainable future, embodying the spirit of the campaign and encouraging citizens to actively participate in making India a greener nation.
