IPS officer Sumati, Malkajgiri CP, was harassed by men during a plainclothes midnight operation in Hyderabad's Dilsukhnagar.

In one undercover operation conducted by Sumathi IPS in Dilsukhnagar, the horrific truth about the safety of women in Hyderabad has been revealed. To get firsthand information on the threats women face once darkness falls, the officer dressed up like any other person and stood by herself at a bus stand after midnight. Within a relatively short span of time, she was apparently approached by almost 40 men.

This process took place between midnight and half past three in the morning and was characterised by a continuous flow of people advancing toward the lady with indecent comments. It was surprising to see the high number of cases that were occurring within such a small period against a single person, which was an indication of what is happening in public areas these days. Luckily, police forces that had been stationed close by managed to arrest them.

Surprisingly, those rounded up were not career criminals but largely consisted of students and white-collar employees. Police noted that several of the individuals were under the influence of various substances at the time. Following their detention, all 40 men were put through mandatory counselling sessions designed to confront and rectify their predatory behaviour.

This initiative by the Commissioner’s office was intended to move beyond statistics and capture the real-time challenges women navigate every night. By providing direct, undeniable evidence of systemic harassment, the operation has sent a blunt warning to the public that such conduct will no longer go unchecked.

The fallout from the mission has reignited a fierce debate regarding urban safety and the effectiveness of night-time policing. Although officials have been very clear about their determination to enforce laws strictly, this event has made people wonder how such an advanced city can be so unfriendly towards women after sunset. Officials have now called upon citizens to take joint responsibility for making sure that public spaces are safe for all, irrespective of the time of day.
