Massive search operations have been launched to hunt down the militants in a remote village in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), security officials said on Thursday.

Searches were initiated jointly by the J&K police and army at Mohri Shahstar in the Gursai top area late Wednesday night following information about the presence of some militants in the area, they said.

Officials said the security forces challenged the militants moving towards the forest, leading to a brief gunfight between the militants and security forces.

They said that the area had been cordoned off, reinforcements were rushed and a massive search operation was launched to track down the militants hiding in the forests, the officials said.

Along with additional manpower the security forces are being assisted by the Army’s sniffer dogs and drones, while a helicopter was seen hovering over the forest area this morning to track down the suspected militants in the area.

Earlier on September 15, security forces and militants engaged in a gunfight in the Poonch district. The last encounter took place at the same Gursai Top in Mendhar where searches are being conducted currently.

The security forces, while closing in on the suspected spot, came under heavy fire from the militants, triggering a fierce gunfight.

There were, however, no reports of casualties during the last confrontation.

The security forces have recently increased their anti-terror operations in the Jammu division following the fears of the presence of some 50-60 highly trained Pakistani militants in the forest areas.
