In a horribly tragic incident in Haryana's Faridabad, police have found the body of a 25-year-old woman, Tannu Rajput, whose alleged murder and clandestine burial in a ditch near her in-laws' home by them are a shocking horror.
Her body was found nearly two months after she was initially reported missing.
Rajput, who wed Arun Singh, 28, in 2023, went missing on April 25. Then her husband had lodged a complaint at the Palla police station stating that she was mentally challenged and had gone missing a day ago. But subsequent investigations have found that this was a sham for a planned murder.
The breakthrough followed after Tannu's father raised an alarm over a newly dug pit outside the family's house in Roshan Nagar, Palla.
The police acted on the tip-off and interrogated Arun Singh's father, Bhoop Singh, 50. Following hours of questioning, he reportedly admitted that Tannu was murdered and her body buried in the pit at midnight.
A JCB machine was taken to the site to dig.
Police dug almost 8 to 10 feet short of that when they found the remains of the woman, which were later recognized by her family members through her attire. An autopsy was carried out at Badshah Khan Civil Hospital by a medical board, with results to be obtained within the next week.
A native of Uttar Pradesh's Firozabad district's Khera village, Tannu's disappearance was dismissed by her family. They denied that she had eloped and insisted she never would without telling them.
When weeks went by and they heard no news of her, they became worried.
The first investigation shows a great extent of planning in hiding the murder. As per police, the family had previously informed neighbours that the digging pit outside the house was for a soak pit to avoid waterlogging.
It was later, however, used as the grave for the woman who was murdered.
Witnesses testified that a wedding ceremony was held in the lane on 22 April. On the next day, the excavation started. Plastic sheeting was spread over the pit in the name of preventing accidents.
The in-laws employed an earthmover to finish the burial, avoiding the deployment of outside labourers to prevent leaks.
Inspector Satya Parkash, SHO Palla police station, verified that the hole was originally excavated for the sewer line connection, since the locality does not have a proper drainage network. It was later filled with sand and finally utilized to dispose of Tannu after she was supposed to have been killed.
