Prime Minister Mark Carney will arrive in India on Friday for a four-day visit aimed at normalising bilateral relations strained after the 2023 diplomatic row over the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The incident had prompted reciprocal diplomat recalls and heightened tensions between New Delhi and Ottawa. Carney’s visit marks his first to India as Prime Minister and is seen as a key step in resetting ties.
During his visit, Carney will first travel to Mumbai for business engagements, meeting leading Indian and Canadian corporate leaders, financial experts, and innovators. He will then proceed to New Delhi, where he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are scheduled to hold wide-ranging talks on Monday. Discussions are expected to focus on trade, energy, technology, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research, and innovation, while also covering regional and global developments.
Both leaders will participate in the India-Canada CEOs Forum, highlighting the economic dimension of the partnership. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the meeting will review progress across key areas of the strategic partnership and reaffirm the shared vision of a forward-looking, constructive, and balanced relationship grounded in mutual respect and growing economic complementarities.
India-Canada relations hit a low after Canada’s 2023 allegations of an Indian connection to Nijjar’s killing, which New Delhi dismissed as “absurd.” In October 2024, India recalled its high commissioner and five other diplomats, while Canada expelled an equal number. Carney’s election victory in April 2025 paved the way for resetting ties, with both nations reinstating their high commissioners.
