Modi govt 3.0 holds first cabinet meet

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chairs the first meeting of his new Cabinet, attended by the newly-inducted ministers, at the prime minister's 7, Lok Kalyan Marg residence, in New Delhi on Monday, June 10, 2024.

The newly formed Modi government, 3.0, convened its inaugural cabinet meeting on Monday evening, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence on 7, Lok Kalyan Marg.

The meeting proceeded despite the PM's delay in announcing ministerial portfolios, with several newly inducted ministers, including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, S Jaishanker, JP Nadda, Shivraj Singh Chauhan, H D Kumaraswamy, and Manohar Lal Khattar, among others, in attendance.

During the Union Cabinet meeting, it was decided to extend assistance to 3 crore additional rural and urban households for housing construction, addressing the growing housing requirements.

The Government of India has been implementing the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana since 2015-16 to provide aid to eligible rural and urban households for constructing houses with basic amenities.

Over the past decade, a total of 4.21 Crore houses have been completed under PMAY for eligible poor families.

All houses constructed under PMAY receive basic amenities such as Household Toilets, LPG connection, Electricity connection, and Functional Household Tap Connection through convergence with other central and state government schemes.

On Sunday, a grand swearing-in ceremony marked the beginning of the Modi government 3.0, attended by notable foreign dignitaries and prominent personalities from across India.

It was PM Modi's longest swearing-in ceremony yet, with 72 ministers taking the oath of office.

The new cabinet comprises 30 cabinet ministers, 5 ministers of state with independent charge, and 36 state ministers, accommodating members from all coalition partners. Out of the 72 ministers, 60 are from the BJP.

Notable minority representatives include Hardeep Puri and Ravneet Bittu from the Sikh community, Kiren Rijiju from the Buddhist community, and George Kurian and Pabitra Margherita from the Christian community.

This marks the second time in Indian history that a leader has been elected Prime Minister for three consecutive terms, a feat previously achieved by Jawaharlal Nehru and now matched by Narendra Modi.
