Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated the Indian contingent for their unprecedented success at the World Para-Athletics Championships, held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi from September 23 to Sunday.

Celebrating their historic achievement, Modi noted that their “success will inspire several people.” India secured a record-breaking 22 medals, comprising six gold, nine silver, and seven bronze, marking the country’s best-ever performance at the global event.

In a post on X, Modi shared, “A historic performance by our para-athletes! This year’s World Para-Athletics Championships have been very special. The Indian contingent had its best-ever performance, winning 22 medals, including 6 Gold Medals.”

He added, “Congrats to our athletes. Their success will inspire several people. I am proud of each and every member of our contingent and wish them the very best for their future endeavours.” This haul surpasses India’s previous performances, which included nine medals at Dubai 2019, ten at Paris 2023, and 17 at Kobe 2024, underscoring the remarkable progress of Indian para-athletes.

The 2025 Championships marked a significant milestone for India as the host nation, joining the ranks of elite organisers. The iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium welcomed over 2,200 athletes from more than 100 countries, who competed in 186 medal events.

Modi expressed pride in India’s role as host, stating, “Hosting the tournament in Delhi has also been an honour for India. Gratitude to athletes and support staff from almost 100 nations who were a part of the tournament.”

The stellar performance of Indian para-athletes at the Championships reflects the robust support provided by the Indian government. Of the medal winners, 15 athletes were part of the government’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), and one was from the Khelo India programme. A total of 23 TOPS athletes and 22 Khelo India athletes represented India at the event, showcasing the impact of these initiatives in nurturing talent and fostering excellence in para-sports.

The success at the World Para-Athletics Championships 2025 not only highlights the growing prowess of Indian para-athletes but also reinforces India’s capability to host world-class sporting events, further elevating its stature on the global stage.
