Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the much-awaited Z-Morh Tunnel at Sonamarg, marking a significant step towards the all-weather connectivity between Ladakh and Srinagar.
The inauguration ceremony, attended by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and Union ministers Nitin Gadkari and Dr Jitendra Singh, took place at the east end of the tunnel.
Following the inauguration, PM Modi took a ride inside the tunnel, becoming the first to experience the historic Z-Morh Tunnel.
The project is expected to boost tourism and connectivity in the region in the coming days.
The 6.5-kilometer-long tunnel, which has been in the works since 2015, is set to revolutionise travel, ensuring that Sonamarg remains accessible year-round despite harsh winter conditions.
Initially delayed due to contractor issues, the project has now been completed at a cost of Rs 2,716.90 crore.
While the tunnel is expected to transform the local economy by becoming one of the top tourist attractions in the region, the tunnel is also a game changer
as it has significant implications from the strategic and defense point of view.
Meanwhile, in Ganderbal, the residents expressed their joy and shared their optimism about the famous tourist destination’s future.
“This tunnel will significantly boost tourist numbers,” said Javaid Ahmad, a local tour operator.
People running various businesses in and around the region are expecting new job opportunities in tourism-related services.
“The increased tourist numbers will employ thousands of jobless youth,” said another local.
The tunnel’s completion is expected to enhance regional tourism and ensure consistent access to this scenic destination, even during the harsh winter months.
Furthermore, the adviser to CM Nasir Aslam Wani said that Sonamarg has the potential to become the best ski destination," adding that the slopes here are the best suited for skiing.”
