In an unexpected yet significant moment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi exchanged a rare handshake in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
The cordial gesture occurred just before they escorted Om Birla to the Speaker’s Chair following his election as the Speaker of the Lower House.
The event unfolded as pro-tem Speaker B Mahtab announced Birla's unanimous selection. PM Modi then approached the front benches to congratulate the newly elected Speaker, where he was soon joined by Gandhi.
In a notable moment, Gandhi extended his hand to Modi, who reciprocated with a smile. The two leaders then accompanied Birla to the Speaker's chair, marking a moment of unity in the often contentious Parliament.
This isn't the first time Gandhi has reached out to Modi.
In 2018, Gandhi famously hugged Modi during a Parliament session, a gesture that quickly went viral, capturing headlines and television screens across the nation. Modi, initially surprised, responded with a pat on Gandhi’s back.
