BJP MLA Mohan Singh Bisht has been elected as the deputy speaker of the Delhi Assembly, marking a significant development in the state’s political landscape. His appointment was proposed by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and was met with unanimous support from all MLAs.
Bisht, a seasoned leader, recently won from the Mustafabad constituency, securing a decisive victory over AAP’s Adeel Ahmad Khan by a margin of over 17,000 votes.
Expressing gratitude after his appointment, he acknowledged the trust placed in him by his party and leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President JP Nadda.
Speaking about the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report, Bisht confirmed that it would be sent to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which would present its findings after three months. His remarks come amid growing scrutiny of financial dealings under the previous administration.
Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma extended his best wishes to Bisht, highlighting his extensive experience in the Assembly. Verma described him as a senior and respected leader who has contested elections seven times, winning six of them. He praised the decision to elect Bisht as a reflection of bipartisan support.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders continued their attack on the previous AAP government, accusing it of widespread corruption. Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa alleged that the former administration was involved in multiple scams, including those related to liquor, education, transport, and CCTV cameras.
He criticised the AAP government’s claims about the cameras being installed for security purposes, suggesting that even those responsible for installing them engaged in fraudulent practices.
Sirsa’s remarks were echoed by BJP MLA Om Prakash Sharma, who raised concerns about irregularities in the installation of CCTV cameras across Delhi.
He claimed that there were significant discrepancies in payments related to the project and suggested that a CAG audit should be conducted to uncover any misuse of funds.
On the same day, Delhi Speaker Vijender Gupta recognised AAP MLA Atishi as the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. This decision followed AAP’s formal appointment of Atishi to the role.
As the Leader of the Opposition, she will serve under the provisions of the Salary and Allowances of Leaders of Opposition in Legislative Assembly Act, 2001.
