The proceedings in both Houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day on Thursday as Opposition protests continued over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar.
The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha will reconvene on Friday at 11 am. In the Lok Sabha, Krishna Prasad Tenneti, who was chairing the session, adjourned the House during a discussion on the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2024.
In the Rajya Sabha, MP Bhubaneshwar Kalita, presiding over the House, adjourned proceedings amid sloganeering by Opposition members while the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill was being discussed.
Earlier in the day, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm shortly after it convened at 11 am, with Speaker Om Birla urging Opposition MPs not to disrupt proceedings.
He emphasised that the conduct of members should uphold the dignity of the House and raised concerns over members raising slogans and carrying banners.
Birla criticised the behaviour of some members, stating, “Such conduct is not in a party’s ‘sanskar’, but the way the new generation is behaving, it is being seen by the entire country.”
Amid the repeated adjournments, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi reiterated the Opposition’s demand for a discussion on the SIR exercise in Bihar.
Speaking to the media, Gogoi said, “For the last three days, we have been demanding a discussion on the SIR, but not a single response has come from the BJP ministers so far. We just want to ask them whether or not there will be a discussion on SIR. Yes or no. Once they answer, the House proceedings can begin.”
He added that the Election Commission presenting its view does not mean Parliament should not deliberate on the issue, emphasising that MPs have a duty to voice the concerns of the public inside the House.
“The public wants to listen to the central government and Prime Minister Modi. So, a discussion should happen where they bring forward their view, and we will keep the reality, and the nation can listen to both views,” Gogoi told the media agency.
The Opposition has maintained that a debate in Parliament will ensure accountability and clarity on the revision of the voter list in Bihar, an issue they claim is of significant public interest.
