A mother and her twin children were reportedly among six persons who drowned when their boat, ferrying mostly students and teenagers from Gandarbal to Batwara near Sringar, capsized in Jhelum river early on Tuesday morning.
Till reports last came in six persons had been rescued, of whom three had been hospitalised and the other three had been released.
Various media reports said that a woman with her 12-year-old twins drowned when their boat crashed into a bridge under constrution and overturned in the swollen Jhelum at 7.30 am.
When reports last came in search operations were continuing for three others in the river, including an adult and children, Srinagar deputy commissioner Dr Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat said.
Water levels had risen after incessant rain.
State Disaster Response Force teams, (SDRF), NDRF, CRPF and a special MARCOS team of marine commandos were involved in rescue operations, the Srinagar SSP said.
Locals had reported earlier that the majority of people being ferried were teenagers and children on their way to school.
Accounts also varied of the number of people on the boat, with people saying there being 15 to 26 people on board.
