The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Wednesday directed the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against BJP minister Kunwar Vijay Shah over his alleged derogatory remarks about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a serving officer in the Indian Army.
Justice Atul Sreedharan ordered the Director General of Police to file the FIR by Wednesday evening, warning that failure to comply would invite action under the Contempt of Courts Act.
The court’s decision came during a hearing in which the counsel representing Shah argued that the court’s directive was based solely on media reports. In response, the bench stated that it would now include video links of the minister’s remarks in the official record to substantiate the case.
When the Advocate General requested additional time to act on the court's order, Justice Sreedharan declined, saying, “I may not be alive tomorrow,” highlighting the urgency and seriousness of the matter.
The remarks in question, made by Shah during a recent public event, have sparked widespread criticism across the political spectrum.
Colonel Qureshi, who was part of the media briefing team during 'Operation Sindoor', was allegedly targeted for her religious identity, drawing condemnation from opposition leaders and civil society groups.
