On Saturday, opposition MPs staged a 5 minutes brief walkout during Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget speech, demanding a government statement on the tragic Kumbh stampede.
The stampede, which occurred on January 29, claimed the lives of 30 people.
As soon as the Lok Sabha convened at 11 am, opposition members began raising slogans to voice their concerns over the incident. The chanting continued for around five minutes, during which Sitharaman began presenting her Budget. Despite the disruptions, the minister proceeded with her speech as planned.
After the brief protest, several opposition MPs walked out of the House, although they returned to their seats within minutes. Trinamool Congress MPs, however, did not participate in the walkout.
As the Budget speech continued, the opposition members demanded that the government make an official statement on the tragic stampede, as well as call for a discussion on the incident after the Budget presentation.
This momentary disruption underlined the ongoing tensions between the government and the opposition, with the latter pushing for answers on the incident that left many families grieving.
The walkout, though brief, highlighted the opposition’s determination to raise issues of national importance, even amidst significant legislative proceedings like the Budget speech.
