MS Dhoni aims to trademark sobriquet 'Captain Cool'.

Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has filed a trademark application for the phrase ‘CAPTAIN COOL’, a sobriquet long associated with his calm demeanour and composed leadership on the cricket field.

According to records on the Trade Marks Registry portal, the application has been marked as ‘accepted and advertised’ and was published in the official trademark journal on 16 June. The application itself was filed earlier this month on June 5.

The proposed trademark is listed under categories that include sports training, sports coaching, and related services and facilities.

No comment has yet been received from Dhoni or his representatives regarding the move.

Interestingly, the name had also previously been subject to a trademark filing by another entity, Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Pvt Ltd. However, that application is currently marked as ‘rectification filed’, indicating that it is under dispute or review.

Dhoni’s application comes shortly after his induction into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame for 2025. The former wicketkeeper-batsman was honoured alongside seven other players, including Australian opener Matthew Hayden and South African stalwart Hashim Amla.

In its citation, the International Cricket Council (ICC) lauded Dhoni for his exceptional consistency, fitness and longevity.

“Celebrated for his calm under pressure and unmatched tactical nous, but also a trailblazer in the shorter formats, MS Dhoni’s legacy as one of the game’s greatest finishers, leaders and wicketkeepers has been honoured with his induction into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame,” the ICC said in a statement.

Known widely for his unflappable presence on the field and dubbed ‘Captain Cool’ by fans and commentators alike, Dhoni’s latest move appears aimed at formally protecting the moniker that has become synonymous with his identity in global cricket.
