Navi Mumbai Airport to accommodate diverted flights during Mumbai Terminal 1 renovation.

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will temporarily shut down Terminal 1 for an extensive renovation aimed at enhancing its capacity.

The planned renovation will take place over four years, with the goal of accommodating an additional 20 million passengers annually, which will mark a 42 per cent increase in its current capacity.

As a result, millions of passengers flying through Mumbai will be diverted to Terminal 2 and the newly developed Navi Mumbai International Airport during this period.

The renovation is set to begin in November 2025 and will proceed in phases to minimise disruption. The first phase involves demolishing the existing structure, followed by the construction of a new, modern terminal.

The authorities project that the transformation will be completed by 2029. This redevelopment is crucial to meeting the growing demand for air travel, as it coincides with the anticipated rise in domestic passengers at the airport.

Terminal 2, which will continue to operate during the renovations, will bear the brunt of the extra traffic. The newly constructed Navi Mumbai International Airport will also serve as a key alternative for passengers during this period.

The upgrade will include major improvements in infrastructure, such as the installation of cooling landscaping, multipurpose substations, and an updated baggage handling system.

Upon completion of the redevelopment, Terminal 1 will be able to manage significantly higher passenger traffic, making it better equipped to handle both domestic and potentially international flights.

The terminal’s modernisation will not only boost capacity but also improve the overall passenger experience. This major renovation project is a step towards preparing Mumbai’s airport infrastructure for the future, ensuring it keeps pace with growing travel demands.

The project is being managed by the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) and operated by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd.

As the redevelopment progresses, passengers flying out of Mumbai will experience a shift in operations, with Terminal 2 and Navi Mumbai Airport taking on the responsibility of accommodating the diverted flights.
