In a remarkable achievement, young Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre made history by breaking a five-year-old record held by Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25. Mhatre, at just 17 years and 168 days old, became the youngest player in the world to score over 150 runs in List A cricket.
He accomplished this feat during Mumbai's match against Nagaland on December 31 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Mhatre's blistering knock of 181 runs off 117 balls included 15 fours and 11 sixes, showcasing his powerful batting skills.
His innings not only propelled Mumbai to a commanding total of 403/7 in their allotted 50 overs but also saw him surpass Jaiswal’s previous record of 17 years and 291 days, which was set in 2019 against Jharkhand.
The feat also places Mhatre as the youngest player to achieve such a milestone in the history of List A cricket. Robin Uthappa, who achieved the same landmark at 19 years and 63 days, also finds a place in the top three of this list.
Mhatre’s knock was instrumental in Mumbai's dominating start, with his partnership of 156 runs for the first wicket with Angkrish Raghuvanshi (56 off 66) laying the foundation for a high-scoring total.
His innings came to an end in the 37th over, but it had already set the stage for Mumbai’s massive total. Captain Shardul Thakur also contributed significantly, finishing unbeaten on 73 from just 28 balls, including two fours and eight sixes.
Nagaland, in response, struggled to keep up with the demanding target. Although Sedezhalie Rupero played a valuable knock, scoring 53 runs from 110 balls, his efforts were not enough to mount a serious challenge to Mumbai’s total.
Mumbai's dominant performance showcased their batting prowess, and Mhatre’s historic knock was the highlight of the day.
This achievement adds to Mhatre's growing list of accomplishments. Earlier in the season, he had scored 78 runs off 82 balls against Karnataka in a Group C encounter.
He was also one of India's standout performers in the recently concluded Under-19 Asia Cup, where he scored 176 runs in five innings at an average of 44, with two half-centuries to his name.
