Manohar Joshi, the Former Lok Sabha Speaker and Former Maharashtra Chief Minister died today following a cardiac arrest at the age of 86. Amid illness, Joshi was admitted to the Hinduja Hospital in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), for a few days.
Joshi who also remained as a Teacher, began his political career in 1967. He commenced his political journey by participating in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, subsequently joining the Shiv Sena, and was among the popular leaders during the 1980s.
During the tenure of the Vajpayee government from 2002 to 2004, Joshi served as the Lok Sabha Speaker.
The political leaders expressed condolences on Joshi's demise.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi writing on social platform X stated, "He was a veteran leader who spent years in public service and held various responsibilities at the municipal, state and national level. As Maharashtra CM, he worked tirelessly for the state's progress. He also made noteworthy contributions as a Union Minister."
"During his tenure as the Lok Sabha speaker, Modi said, Joshi strove to make parliamentary processes more vibrant and participative. Manohar Joshi Ji will also be remembered for his diligence as a legislator, having had the honour of serving in all four legislatures. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti," the post adds.
President Droupadi Murmu said, "Sad to learn about the demise of Shri Manohar Joshi, a veteran leader who had served as Lok Sabha speaker and Maharashtra chief minister. In his long public life, Shri Joshi endeared himself to people, earned admiration for his sharp wit and intellect, and was loved by leaders cutting across party lines. My heartfelt condolences to his family members and followers."
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla condoling the death of his predecessor, cited, "I express my condolences on the demise of former Lok Sabha Speaker and senior politician Shri Manohar Joshi. Enriching democratic values, he established the best parliamentary traditions."
Union Home Minister Amit Shah wrote on X, saying, "Saddened by the demise of former Lok Sabha speaker and former chief minister of Maharashtra Manohar Joshi. His contributions to the politics of the country and Maharashtra will always remain in our memory. I express my condolences to his family and fans. May God give place to the departed soul. Om Shanti."
Former CM Ashok Chavan, Former Union minister and NCP founder Sharad Pawar, Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais, Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra, and Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma also paid their condolences to the late political leader.
