A nationwide revision of electoral rolls is set to begin by October, according to sources within the Election Commission. The proposal was approved during a recent meeting with Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) from all states and Union Territories.

The Election Commission had previously conducted a similar voter roll revision in Bihar in preparation for the state assembly elections. This process will now be expanded to cover the entire country.

Sources indicate that the announcement for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) might be made before the conclusion of the Bihar elections. During a conference-cum-workshop, CEOs were asked about their readiness for the revision. Most officials assured the Commission that the necessary preparations would be finished by September, allowing for an October launch.

The day-long meeting, which included presentations that lasted over three and a half hours, focused on the logistical aspects of the SIR. The Election Commission instructed state CEOs to compile a list of acceptable documents for voter verification. These documents would be based on what is locally accepted and easily available, as this can vary by region.

States in the northeast, coastal regions, and those with tribal populations, for example, frequently have distinctive documents that serve as identification and proof of residency. Furthermore, widely accepted certificates are issued by local and regional autonomous councils in many locations. When completing the verification process, the Commission has requested that states take these regional differences into consideration.

"Cleaning up" the voter lists is the main goal of the Special Intensive Revision, according to the Election Commission. In addition to making sure that all eligible voters are listed on the rolls, this entails eliminating the names of people who have passed away, moved permanently, or are not citizens.
