Preparing school students for a technology-driven future, the National Council of Educational Research and Training has begun work on dedicated Artificial Intelligence textbooks for Classes 11 and 12, the Ministry of Education informed the Parliament.

The initiative, the Ministry said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, forms part of the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, aimed at strengthening advanced digital and computational skills at the senior secondary level.

NCERT has constituted a specialised textbook development team to design syllabi and learning material focused on Artificial Intelligence, with the objective of equipping students with competencies relevant to a rapidly evolving digital economy.

“As a follow-up to NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023, NCERT has constituted a textbook team to develop syllabi and textbooks of Artificial Intelligence for Grades 11 and 12. NCERT has also included a project on Animation and Games in the vocational education textbook for Grade 6, which includes the use of AI tools,” the Ministry of Education said.

As part of early exposure to emerging technologies, NCERT has introduced an AI-based project on Animation and Games in the vocational education textbook for Class 6. The project is designed to familiarise students with practical applications of artificial intelligence through experiential learning.

The Ministry reiterated that Artificial Intelligence and Computational Thinking would form key pillars of future-ready education. According to the government, AI education will be introduced across all schools from Class 3 onwards beginning with the 2026–27 academic session.

Parallel efforts are also underway at the board level. The Central Board of Secondary Education has drafted a comprehensive curriculum on AI and computational thinking for students from Classes 3 to 12, with foundational concepts introduced early and advanced modules proposed for higher classes.

Under the framework, AI and computational thinking are expected to become mandatory subjects for Classes 9 and 10, reinforcing structured digital learning during the middle and secondary stages.

To further strengthen the national AI education ecosystem, the government has launched SOAR, Skilling for AI Readiness, a nationwide initiative aligned with NEP 2020, the National Programme on AI Skilling Framework and the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

The programme seeks to embed AI awareness and foundational competencies among students from Classes 6 to 12 while also enhancing AI literacy and capacity-building among teachers.
