Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) candidate for Vice President, filed his nomination on Wednesday in a significant display of unity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several Union ministers were present to support the Maharashtra Governor.
Accompanying Radhakrishnan to the returning officer were Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President JP Nadda, and Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.
According to sources, four sets of nomination papers were submitted, with Prime Minister Modi acting as the chief proposer for the first set. Prior to filing, Radhakrishnan paid tribute to prominent figures at the Prerna Sthal in the Parliament complex, bowing before the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and others.
His selection as the NDA's candidate was announced on Sunday by BJP President JP Nadda following a Parliamentary Board meeting. A veteran BJP leader, Radhakrishnan has served as a Member of Parliament and as Governor of Jharkhand and Telangana. He was twice elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore and previously led the BJP in Tamil Nadu as its State President.
Prime Minister Modi has lauded Radhakrishnan for his "dedication, humility, and intellect," highlighting his extensive grassroots work in Tamil Nadu. The candidate was also felicitated at the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting on Tuesday.
Given the comfortable majority the BJP-led NDA holds in the electoral college, which consists of members from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Radhakrishnan's victory in the September 9 election is considered a certainty.
