In a chilling incident reminiscent of the infamous Sonam–Raja Raghuvanshi case, a newly married woman in the Garhwa district of Jharkhand has been arrested for allegedly poisoning her husband.
The accused, Sunita Devi, is suspected of lacing her husband’s food with pesticide on the night of 15 June. The following morning, 22-year-old Buddhnath Singh was found dead inside their home.
Police officials revealed that Sunita had persuaded her husband to purchase the pesticide, claiming it was required for agricultural use. The victim’s mother, Rajmati Devi, lodged an FIR on Monday, accusing her daughter-in-law of deliberately poisoning Buddhnath.
Following the complaint, the Ranka police arrested Sunita and remanded her in judicial custody. Authorities are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the definitive cause of death.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer Rohit Kumar Singh confirmed the arrest, explaining that Sunita was taken into custody following her mother-in-law’s formal complaint.
Initially, Sunita attempted to mislead the investigation by accusing her mother-in-law. However, during interrogation, she confessed to mixing poison into her husband’s meal, which led to his death.
The case remains under active investigation, with police awaiting forensic results for further clarity.
Buddhnath’s family alleges that Sunita was reluctant to live with her husband from the outset. According to them, she only returned to her in-laws’ home under pressure from relatives and community leaders.
The FIR states that Buddhnath Singh, a resident of Bahokundar village under the jurisdiction of Ranka police, married Sunita, daughter of Raghunath Singh from Bishunpur village in Chhattisgarh’s Ramchandrapur area, on 11 May 2025.
The day after arriving at her marital home, Sunita left for her parental home, expressing dissatisfaction with the marriage. A reconciliation meeting was held on 5 June, after which she agreed to return to Garhwa with her husband.
