A case has been registered against a news channel and its anchor, accusing them of spreading communal hatred through a program aired recently, as per police sources on Monday.
The complaint, filed by Tanveer Ahmed on May 11, asserts that during a program aired at 8:30 pm on May 9, the anchor referenced a working paper of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM).
The paper allegedly indicated a decline of 7.8 per cent in the Hindu population between 1950 and 2015.
The complaint further alleges that while displaying population percentages, the channel juxtaposed an Indian flag against the backdrop of Hindu population percentage and a Pakistan flag against the backdrop of Muslim population percentage.
The same Pakistan flag was purportedly used while referring to the percentage of Muslims in Pakistan.
According to the complaint, the anchor stated that one reason for the increasing Muslim population in India is the absence of a minimum marriage age for Muslims.
Additionally, it was alleged that if a complaint is lodged against child marriage in the Social Welfare Department, they cannot take action due to Islamic personal law, leading to early marriages and more children.
The complaint contends that such statements are false, as the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act prohibits child marriage for all, regardless of religion. Moreover, the anchor allegedly stated that not having children is against the religion of Islam, which was perceived as an insult to the Muslim community.
Responding to the complaint, authorities registered a case against the news channel and its anchor under section 505 (2) of the Indian Penal Code at High Grounds police station. This section pertains to statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred, or ill will between classes.
