Incumbent Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is likely to tender his resignation and take oath for the 10th time as CM on November 20, following the landslide victory of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the recently concluded Assembly elections. According to reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with several chief ministers and deputy chief ministers of NDA-ruling states, will participate in the oath-taking ceremony.
Nitish Kumar is likely to be elected as the legislature party leader on November 19, a day before taking oath as Bihar CM at a programme at Gandhi Maidan in Patna. Nitish has already met Governor Arif Mohammad Khan in Patna to recommend the dissolution of the current legislative assembly and begin the transition process for the new administration.
Nitish Kumar, the JD (U) supremo, is expected to meet the Governor again to formally tender his resignation, along with a letter of support from all NDA constituents. Other ministers of the new cabinet are also expected to be sworn in during the programme.
Hectic lobbying is underway among NDA partners to finalise cabinet berths. The new cabinet is likely to include five to six fresh faces from the BJP and JD (U). Umesh Singh Kushwaha, JD (U) state chief and Mahnar seat winner, is likely to be inducted. Alongside JD (U) and BJP, Chirag Paswan’s LJP (RV), Jitan Ram Manjhi’s HAM-S, and Upendra Kushwaha’s RLM will also be part of the new cabinet.
The BJP on Tuesday appointed Keshav Prasad Maurya, the deputy chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, as the central observer for the election of the leader of the party’s legislative group. Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti have been appointed as central co-observers.
The NDA is considering allocating roughly one ministerial post for every six MLAs in order to ensure balanced representation within the alliance. The coalition government would include members from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Janata Dal (United) or JD (U), Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM), and Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) or HAM(S).
Meanwhile, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has already been elected as the leader of the opposition (LOP) for the Bihar legislative assembly. The Raghopur MLA will serve as the LOP for a second time after suffering a massive defeat to the NDA in the recently concluded elections.
The NDA secured a landslide victory in the assembly polls, winning a total of 202 seats out of 243, and the BJP itself emerged as the single largest party after it won 89 seats. JD (U) won 85 seats, LJP (RV) 19, HAM(S) five, and RLM four seats.
In the Mahagathbandhan alliance, RJD won only 25 seats, reducing its seat tally and losing the title of the single largest party in the assembly. Apart from RJD, Congress won six seats, CPI (ML-L) won two, and CPI (M) bagged one seat.
