A Delhi court on Thursday dismissed a complaint that sought to register a First Information Report (FIR) against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. The complaint pertained to allegations regarding her inclusion in a voter list before she obtained Indian citizenship.
The Rouse Avenue Court's decision was in response to a plea filed by a lawyer who alleged that Gandhi was on the Delhi voters’ list in 1980, even though she acquired Indian citizenship on April 30, 1983. The complainant requested the court to direct the police to register an FIR and investigate the matter. The complaint claimed that Gandhi's name was added to the voters’ list in 1980 and subsequently removed in 1982.
The lawyer's petition argued that since Gandhi became an Indian citizen on April 30, 1983, her name's presence on the 1980 Delhi voters' roll was grounds for a police investigation.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had also raised similar allegations, claiming that Sonia Gandhi's name appeared on the electoral rolls three years before she became a citizen. This claim was made as a response to the opposition's accusations of voter fraud in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. During a press conference, former Union Minister and BJP MP Anurag Thakur stated that Gandhi, who was born in Italy, was added to the voter list in 1980, three years before she officially became an Indian citizen.
According to the Representation of the People Act, 1950, a person who is not a citizen of India is ineligible for registration on the electoral rolls. Despite these claims, the court's order refused to direct the registration of an FIR and dismissed the complaint.
