No political party opposed Bihar draft voter list: ECI

More Than 10,000 Electors File Objections Directly to ECI.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced that none of the political parties, including the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-led Opposition, have filed objections or complaints concerning the draft electoral rolls published for Bihar on August 1st.

The commission further stated that over 10,000 individual electors have submitted objections directly to the poll panel, while more than 50,000 new electors, having recently reached the voting age of 18, have submitted their forms seeking new voter identification cards.

These details were released by the ECI in its routine bulletin on the contentious Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive, an issue that has become a political flashpoint in poll-bound Bihar and has disrupted Parliamentary proceedings since the start of the Monsoon Session on July 21.

This development is significant as it indicates ‘zero resistance’ by the Opposition to the ECI’s SIR exercise following the publication of the draft rolls. This contrasts with earlier phases, when several opposition parties accused the election commission of widespread manipulation intended to favour the ruling party.

The ECI also clarified that all claims and objections will be addressed by the respective Electoral Registration Officers (EROS) or Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROS) after a period of seven days from the verification of eligibility documents.

“As per SIR orders, no name can be removed from the draft list published on August 1st, 2025, without a speaking order by the ERO/AERO after conducting an enquiry and providing a fair and reasonable opportunity,” the commission added.

The draft electoral rolls were published on August 1, and the ECI has allowed a one-month window for individuals and parties to raise complaints or grievances regarding the inclusion or exclusion of names.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has 47,506 booth-level agents (BLAs), the Congress 17,549, and the Left parties over 2,000, together accounting for more than 67,000 agents involved in the process.

The ECI concluded the enumeration phase of the SIR from June 24 to July 25. During this period, over 72.4 million electors out of a total of 78.9 million submitted their enumeration forms.

The ongoing SIR exercise remains central to political debates in Bihar ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
