At least one person was killed and another remains in critical condition after a fire broke out in a 23-storey residential building in Dahisar, Mumbai, on Sunday afternoon, officials said.
The blaze erupted around 3 p.m. on the seventh floor of B Wing, New Jan Kalyan Society, Shanti Nagar, Dahisar East. Residents immediately alerted police and the fire brigade. Seven fire engines were deployed to the scene, and the flames were fully extinguished at 6:10 p.m., according to the Fire Department.
Firefighters rescued 36 people, including men, women and children, who were rushed to nearby hospitals. Nineteen were admitted, while seven others sustained injuries.

At Northern Care Hospital, the condition of a four-year-old boy is critical. One patient was admitted to Pragati Hospital and another to Shatabdi Hospital. Several others rescued from the building are also reported to be in serious condition.
A preliminary investigation found that the fire originated in the basement due to a malfunctioning electric wire, before spreading upward through the building’s electric duct, the Fire Department said.
