Operation Sindoor has emerged as a defining example of the Indian armed forces’ ability to operate as a cohesive unit, displaying the value of tri-services synergy, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan said on Sunday.

Addressing officers at the College of Defence Management in Secunderabad, Gen Chauhan emphasised the need to sustain reforms, strengthen coordination and remain adaptable to meet “evolving security challenges”.

Without divulging specifics, he also outlined a roadmap for theatre commands that, once operational, would bolster joint operational capabilities across the Army, Navy and Air Force.

As part of the continuing drive towards integration, Gen Chauhan unveiled the Joint Primer for Integrated Logistics, which the Defence Ministry described as “a step forward in modernising logistics systems, ensuring the armed forces are always equipped and prepared for any challenge”.

According to the ministry, the primer focuses on digitisation, common provisioning and procurement, and alignment with the national logistics framework, with the aim of improving tri-services coordination, efficiency and organisational effectiveness.

Gen Chauhan said the armed forces were undergoing “transformative changes” to respond to the realities of technology-driven modern warfare. He shared his strategic perspectives on jointness and integration, and outlined key lessons that would help shape the future of integrated operations.

His remarks come as the government presses ahead with its theatre command model, under which integrated formations would operate as single entities responsible for security within specific geographical areas. The move is expected to replace the current system of separate service commands and to ensure optimal use of resources in both peacetime and combat.

Highlighting the achievements of the Department of Military Affairs and the role of national security committees in decision-making, Gen Chauhan stressed the importance of “comprehensive capability development, self-reliance and in-depth understanding” of disruptive technological changes.

“Continued reforms, coordination and adaptability are crucial to meeting evolving national security challenges,” he said.
