Dhankhar-Jaya spat: Scindia demands opposition apology

Opposition must apologise to VP Dhankhar: Scindia

Responding to a question here about the face-off, Scindia said the way the Rajya Sabha chairman has been treated is very sad.

Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia on Sunday demanded that the Opposition apologise to Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar following a confrontation between Dhankhar and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan in the Upper House.

The dispute occurred on Friday when Bachchan accused Dhankhar of addressing her in an "unacceptable tone," prompting an angry response from the Vice President, who asserted that he cannot be "schooled."

Dhankhar added that even a celebrity must adhere to the decorum of the House. Following the exchange, Opposition members walked out, labelling the incident as "disrespect to democracy and the Constitution."

In response to a question about the incident, Scindia expressed disappointment over the treatment of the Rajya Sabha chairman. "He is not only the Speaker of the House but also the Vice President of the country. Every person in the Opposition should apologise for this behaviour. This is not just an insult to the Speaker and Vice President but also to the Constitution and our tricolour," Scindia stated.

The Union Minister further remarked that the public is aware of the disruptions and insults in the House, recalling that the people have delivered their verdict in the 2014 and 2019 elections, and would do so again in 2024 and beyond.

The heated exchange, which took place hours before the Upper House was adjourned sine die on Friday, has added to the ongoing tensions between Dhankhar and the INDIA bloc parties. Sources indicate that the Opposition is considering submitting a notice to move a resolution for the removal of the Vice President from office.

Regarding the upcoming ‘Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan’ ahead of Independence Day, Scindia described it as the "biggest campaign of democracy," urging every citizen of India to hoist the tricolour at home. He also highlighted the efforts of 1.64 lakh post offices across the country working diligently to deliver the national flag in time for the celebrations.
