Opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha once again escalated their protest on Wednesday, demanding an immediate discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and accusing the Union government of “vote theft”. The move comes a day after the House witnessed repeated disruptions over the same issue, forcing multiple adjournments during Tuesday’s session.
On Tuesday, opposition MPs had pressed for a structured debate on the SIR exercise, alleging that it was being used to manipulate the electoral process ahead of forthcoming elections. Repeated sloganeering led to two adjournments before the presiding officer urged the members to raise the matter in an orderly fashion.
However, when the House reassembled on Wednesday, the opposition benches renewed their protest. Members stood up and raised slogans, reiterating their demand for a separate debate on the matter. “Vote theft” and “electoral manipulation” were among the terms frequently heard as the MPs urged the Chair to allow a discussion.
Despite the protests, the House proceeded with the scheduled legislative business. The Indian Institute of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2025, was taken up for consideration, prompting the opposition parties to stage a walkout.
Even as the walkout took place, the government insisted that the SIR process remained a routine revision of electoral rolls and accused the opposition of attempting to stall parliamentary business.
House proceedings continued in the absence of the opposition members, who left the chamber in protest after registering their dissent.
