Manipur Director General of Police Rajiv Singh on Monday said 5,406 sensitive, violent and communal social media posts had been identified since June 2023, with around 3,200 taken down and 187 pages and accounts blocked following the outbreak of ethnic violence in the state.
Speaking at a programme where 477 police vehicles were flagged off by Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh at the 1st Manipur Rifles Ground in Imphal, Singh said the action was taken in coordination with the state IT Department and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
“Since June 1, 2023, a total of 5,406 sensitive, violent and communal posts were identified, and around 3,200 posts were taken down in coordination with the state IT department and MeitY. A total of 187 pages and accounts were also blocked,” the DGP said.
He stressed the need for prevention, monitoring and verification of fake news and misinformation to maintain public order, adding that the Manipur Police’s social media outreach had expanded considerably during the crisis.
“The social media outreach of Manipur Police, which clears doubts and issues clarifications, has also expanded significantly. Its Facebook followers have increased to 79,000 and X followers to 27,000,” Singh said.
Recalling the situation when he assumed office in June 2023, Singh said the state was going through “one of the most difficult and challenging times in its history” due to clashes between two communities.

He said a comprehensive police modernisation plan had been prepared and submitted to the state government later that year. Subsequently, the Ministry of Home Affairs approved Rs 196.61 crore on October 31, 2025 for strengthening security infrastructure, mobility, forensics, communication systems and smart policing initiatives.
“The central government's support has significantly enhanced the operational capability of Manipur Police and strengthened our ability to respond effectively to emerging security challenges,” Singh said.
Of the 477 newly procured police vehicles, including armoured vehicles and two-wheelers, 54 per cent will be deployed in hill districts, while the remaining will be used in valley districts and technical units.
The DGP also said Manipur Police signed an MoU with the National Security Guard in June 2025 for specialised training and capacity enhancement.
Highlighting anti-extortion efforts, Singh said an integrated anti-extortion cell had been set up and over 1,000 extortionists arrested across hill and valley districts.
More than 260 people have been killed and thousands displaced in the ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023.
