Bird flu alert issued in Ranchi after poultry deaths rise.

A bird flu alert has been issued in Jharkhand, particularly in the capital, Ranchi, after 150 chickens and around a dozen quails died at the poultry farm of the Veterinary College at Birsa Agricultural University in Ranchi.

Symptoms of the disease were observed in Chinese chickens kept at the poultry farm, and they died immediately.

Following this, the Pathology Department of the Veterinary College sent samples to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSD) in Bhopal. The investigation confirmed the presence of Avian Influenza (H5N1), commonly known as bird flu.

The NIHSD promptly informed BAU, the Veterinary College, and the central government about the situation.

The Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying sent a letter to the Chief Secretary of Jharkhand, notifying them about the spread of bird flu in Ranchi and advising precautionary measures.

The Ministry requested the Chief Secretary to immediately initiate a campaign for the prevention and control of bird flu under the 'Animal Husbandry Action Plan 2021'.

Additionally, the Ministry informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare so that necessary precautions could be taken.

Authorities were advised to declare the infected area, restrict access, and maintain surveillance within a 10-kilometre radius. Instructions were also given to cull infected birds and thoroughly disinfect the premises.

The dead birds were properly buried at the Veterinary College, and disinfectants were sprayed across the entire campus. As a precautionary measure, unauthorised entry to the main poultry farm has been strictly prohibited.
