The Indian Coast Guard Ship Sachet set sail for Sudan on Friday, carrying a consignment of over two tonnes of life-saving medicines, including critical anti-cancer drugs, as part of India's ongoing humanitarian assistance efforts.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the departure, stating: "Extending Humanitarian Assistance to the People of Sudan. An Indian Coast Guard Ship Sachet departed today for Sudan, carrying a consignment of more than 2 tons of lifesaving medicines including anti-cancer drugs."

The mission comes amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has raged since April 2023, leaving over 25 million people across Sudan, South Sudan, and Chad in dire need of food security assistance.

The World Food Programme has warned that the war threatens to trigger the world's largest hunger crisis, with at least 17 million Sudanese affected.

Earlier in the day, the Indian Coast Guard Ship Sachet also departed for Djibouti, delivering medical aid, including 20 haemodialysis machines and one reverse osmosis (RO) plant.

India’s humanitarian assistance initiatives

India has consistently played a pivotal role in providing aid to nations facing crises. Last month, the country dispatched 26 tonnes of humanitarian assistance to Honduras in response to Tropical Storm SARA.

The consignment comprised essential medical supplies and disaster relief materials, including surgical instruments, glucometers, oximeters, gloves, syringes, intravenous fluids, blankets, sleeping mats, and hygiene kits.

On 27 January, India extended humanitarian assistance to the Kurdistan region of Iraq, sending a consignment of bronchodilators, inhalers, and ventilators to support those in need.

"Vishwabandhu Bharat: India sends Humanitarian Assistance to Iraq. A consignment consisting of bronchodilators, inhalers and ventilators has departed from New Delhi to assist the people in the Kurdistan region of Iraq," the MEA said.

India has been a steadfast supporter of Iraq’s reconstruction efforts, pledging $20 million in 2003 following an urgent appeal from the United Nations Secretary-General.
