In the aftermath of the Haryana assembly election results, Congress leader DK Suresh, brother of Karnataka’s deputy CM DK Shivakumar, acknowledged that overconfidence within the party contributed to their defeat.

Speaking to the media, Suresh admitted that the Congress was overly confident about its chances in Haryana, which ultimately led to the party’s downfall. He noted that while the INDIA alliance had seen success in Jammu and Kashmir, the party's complacency in Haryana was a significant disadvantage.

Reflecting on the loss, Suresh said the party’s high command would thoroughly analyse the reasons behind the defeat, discussing all aspects of the election and identifying lapses in their strategy. He reiterated that overconfidence can have detrimental effects, stating that the party leaders are fully aware of the situation and are looking into it closely.

The election results saw the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secure 48 out of 90 seats in the Haryana assembly, while Congress managed to win 37 seats. Independents won 3 seats, and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) secured 2 seats, as per data from the Election Commission.

This loss has prompted introspection within the Congress, with party members emphasising the need for a comprehensive review of their performance in Haryana.

Meanwhile, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge described the election outcome in Haryana as unexpected. He expressed his gratitude to the voters who supported the party but acknowledged that a detailed response would be forthcoming after the party gathers more information from its ground workers and analyses the facts. Kharge’s comments highlighted the party's commitment to assessing public opinion before making any formal declarations.

In his statement, Kharge reassured party workers, encouraging them not to feel disheartened by the results. He emphasised that the Congress's fight against what he described as ‘dictatorship’ is a long and ongoing battle. While the Haryana results were disappointing for the party, Kharge maintained that their struggle would continue.

As the Congress reflects on its electoral loss in Haryana, it is clear that the party recognizes the importance of addressing internal issues, particularly overconfidence, and rebuilding its strategy for future elections.

With the party leadership committed to understanding the reasons for their defeat and taking corrective measures, the Congress hopes to regain its footing in the political landscape.

The Haryana elections marked a significant win for the BJP, further solidifying its position in the state. For Congress, this serves as a reminder of the need for humility and diligent preparation when approaching elections.

Moving forward, the party is likely to focus on strengthening its internal organisation, boosting worker morale, and devising a more effective strategy to challenge its opponents in upcoming contests.
