In the run-up to the forthcoming general elections, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has cautioned against the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) attempt to exploit the resolved Katchatheevu issue for political gain. He asserts that such a strategy will not only fail but also harm the interests of Tamil communities in Sri Lanka.

Chidambaram accuses the BJP of using the Katchatheevu islet issue, which was resolved five decades ago, as a mere political tool. He questions the sincerity of Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar, urging them to contest from Tamil Nadu and raise the issue directly if they genuinely care about it.

Highlighting the potential consequences of politicising the Katchatheevu matter, Chidambaram emphasises the delicate situation of Tamil populations, both in Sri Lanka and India. He warns that inflammatory statements by central ministers could escalate tensions between the Sri Lankan government and Tamil communities.

Referring to a past RTI reply from the Ministry of External Affairs stating the status of Katchatheevu, Chidambaram argues against reopening a resolved issue. He points out that it was during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tenure that the reply was issued, suggesting that the matter should not be revisited.

Shifting focus, Chidambaram outlines Congress's approach to governance, emphasising a commitment to cooperative federalism and addressing pressing issues like unemployment. He criticises the BJP's centralization of power and economic policies that neglect the welfare of states and exacerbate unemployment.

Highlighting the alarming levels of unemployment, especially among the youth, Chidambaram underscores the urgency of addressing this issue. He questions how students burdened with education loans can repay them if they remain unemployed.

In terms of election strategy, Chidambaram affirms Congress's reliance on its poll manifesto, promising initiatives like granting full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and making certain centralised examinations optional.

Overall, Chidambaram's remarks underscore the importance of responsible politics and genuine concern for the welfare of communities, cautioning against the BJP's politicisation of sensitive issues.
